Our Herd

During peak season, Swan Mountain Outfitters maintains a herd of over 200 horses and mules. We have a variety of breeds, colors, sizes, and personalities to fit every guest. Our wranglers get to know each animal individually and match each rider to an appropriate animal based on rider height and weight, age, and experience level as well as the animal’s size, herd hierarchy, and individual fitness.

size

A horse’s height is measured in unit called “hands”, marked with the symbol “hh”. Our horses range in height from 14hh (56″/1.42m) at the back to 18hh (72″/1.83m), and in weight from 900lbs to 1,800lbs.

Size is a consideration when choosing a horse and rider, but not the only factor! An animal’s size is not an indicator of their personality or their rider’s experience level. Some of our best kid’s horses are large draft crosses, and some of our smaller horses prefer adult riders. Which means you may end up a short horse even if you’re tall, or a tall, wide horse even if you’re petite!

Breed & Temperament

We have a range of breeds in our herd, some of the most notable being Haflingers, Quarter Horses, Appaloosa crosses, and draft crosses. We also have several mules who are valuable members of our string! Mules are half horse, half donkey and identifiable by their large ears.

Regardless of breed, we prioritize horse and mules that are level-headed and gentle. All of our guest animals have been evaluated by staff, know their jobs, and are suitable for beginner riders. However, always remember each horse is a live animal with a unique personality and a mind of their own! As the rider, you are ultimately the one in control of your animal.
